More gearbox issues

Some months ago I replaced my gearbox, ( wish I hadn’t done ) due to fourth gear not selecting, although quite rarely.
Since then I haven’t used the van until now. I know first gears make a whining noise but also second and third does too but not as bad, almost like the box has straight cut gears. Fourth is quiet. I rebuilt this box and didn’t mix gear sets, which I know can create whining. Anyone think this is acceptable?

It all depends upon your noise tolerance.
If there were no problems found when you rebuilt the box I personally would just use it.
Minor gearboxes are/were not the quietest even when new.

Thanks for your thoughts Phil, I can overthink things, it’s not overwhelming and as top gear is fine, long journeys, not that I do many in the van, would be pleasant enough. I wouldn’t be keen on another session under the van !

I know very little about gearboxes and I've never rebuilt one but I had some conversations with gearbox specialists given my recent gearbox troubles and having had a rebuilt gearbox previously. Apparently new parts can be noisy until the gearbox has been run in. Likewise the gearbox can be a bit stiff. Use the van normally but change the gearbox oil after 500 miles. This is very important. The gearbox will quieten down and free up as the parts bed in with each other.

Thanks Stephen, no new parts were used, except bearings etc, i simply stripped, checked and rebuilt the box, however I’m sure you’re right about improving with use. I’m not going to rush into replacing.

Just a thought 4th gear is direct via mainshaft 1st to 3rd are driven via the layshaft. Did you replace the layshaft bearings and is it set up correctly? As they are your noisy gears.

As we used say in the trade "let it develop" diagnostics
It will either shut up or blow up
Hopefully the former
