Cylinder Head Check

I am just in the process of replacing my cylinder head gasket, the head was fitted from an unleaded mini about 10 months ago and there was always a slight oil leak from the head to block joint, which has suddenly got worse the engine nearly loosing all its oil on a 70 mile journey. Usually the engine only used a pint every 700 miles or so. As I don't know the history of this head is there an easy way to tell if the head surface is true and flat. before I refit the head?

Hello John,
if you have a steel ruler and a set of feeler gauges you can check the face for flatness.
I would say no more than 4 thou gap (0.1mm)over the full length.

Or a piece of glass with a small smear of engineer blue on it.

Don't use old glass though! It won't be flat (it sags)

If the head was fom a 998 Mini the inlet valves and the ports are smaller - you will be losing power ! Wanderinstar on here has a 12g206 head (extra big inlet valves) for sale - ideal for your engine (although a 60 thou skim will make it even better) - but not unleaded. Don't worry about it - It will be good for many many miles of motoring - especially if you stick in the exhaust valves from the Mini head !!
