Brake shoes

Hi all, has anyone had any luck finding kevla lined brake shoes? Somebody mentioned they were a good upgrade . Been looking and can't seem to find any. Want to upgrade brakes on my 1952 convertible but not change originality if possible. Ie not add servo or disc conversion.

If your brakes are original to a 1952 they are 7" drums all round.
You can hunt for new old stock brake shoes which may have better linings but beware that they are likely to contain asbestos. Alternatively, you can have you shoes relined with, for example, Ferodo/Mintex linings by companies such as Powertrack Brakes Ltd. Or (and I know you said you want to keep things original) you could upgrade to the later 8" drum front brakes. When you have shoes relined you can discuss with the supplier exactly what you want.

I believe, generally speaking, that Kevlar Linings are an option if you use a re-lining company.
Otherwise they're probably only available on high end sports vehicles in Disc Pad form.

Just to add, I don't believe the swap to 8" drums is so straightforward on a Series MM, as it has the Nuffield hubs and drums which are different to those on the later Series II and 1000 cars.

I am looking at getting some new rear brake shoes, but Mintex and Ferodo ones seem to be unobtainable and no longer made. Borg & Beck replacements abound, but feedback seems to be negative about them. Are there any other sources/makes which are recommended and obtainable?

You're right that Mintex/Ferodo are no longer made. You would have to try to source new old stock.
An alternative is Lockheed Delphi LS1001 but again these are no longer made. These were in production much more recently than the Mintex.
If searching by part number take care that you are ordering the actual genuine article and not a generic equivalent.
Most of the braking occurs at the front but it still makes a significant difference to have the best linings possible at the back.

Thanks for that. I have ordered some Mintex pads for the front discs and will just have to see what I can get for the rear shoes.
