Hi folks, I am replacing the two perished rubber rear bumper stud covers. These: https://www.morrisminorspares.com/body- ... le-p828057
But they will need to be glued/sealed to prevent water getting in to the boot. What is the best product to use?

RTV is as good as anything, maybe black to match the rubber

I use a black rubber sealant for all sealing various items on my Traveller. For example: Wood to metal, Fuel filler grommet, Front wing to inner wing and every thing else. Similar stuff is available.

Those are only the outer cover.
There's an Inner Grommet that's really supposed to be doing most of the work.....
Though it depends how bodged the bumper installation is.
I discovered my car hasn't got the grommets fitted, and the holes look to have been elongated at some point; this winter I might get around to taking the bumper off and sorting it out....

Gentlemen - thank you for your replies. Bernie, I had no idea there was an inner piece, I've never seen that before! So thanks for that. I am now clear on the way forward....

A slightly pointless 'Factoid' (as Steve Wright used to say) in this area of the Minor is the Fibre Washer, Pt No ACA5423, item 40 on the original parts Illustration....

Looking at the pics of the inner grommet, I'm not sure which way round it should go.......it might be more obvious when I have them and got the bumper off.......anyone here know?

Good Question. Given how relatively flush the outer one sits on the bodywork, I'd assume the inner one plugs the hole from the inside, the left of this image in the hole... I'm sure someone who actually has them fitted can tell us.

Does the outer bumper ferrule actually need any sealant? With rubber parts like this I usually give them a massage with silicone grease, wipe off any excess and fit them. The idea of the silicone grease is to keep the rubber supple for longer by preventing the rubber oxidising and perishing. Unpainted steel parts are often sprayed with silicone to prevent them rusting before sale.

Bernie - fitting the grommet from inside the boot would be a bit of a faff, it would be much easier if it can be fitted from the outside after removing the bumper. It may be more obvious when I have the parts and the bumper off.
Stephen - if the inner grommet does its job then you may be right, especially if it grips the bumper stud tight enough to keep it pressed tight against the body.
Somebody on here must have fitted these things on a restoration job?

Just done this job.

First off, the inner rubbers fit with the conical flange on the outside of the car. This means the wider lip also sits on the outside giving a better seal. The conical flange fits neatly into the outer rubber. But it was an unexpectedly awkward job. The bumper itself came off easily and the outer rubbers just pulled off. The old inner ones were a bit reluctant to come out and I had to push from the inside and lever off with a thin, wooden stick.

But the new ones would not go on until I had removed the three nuts, bolts and washers that hold the bumper stud in the boot and pulled the stud rearward out of the hole. Then the new inner rubbers went in the hole fairly easily, with some red rubber grease to help them. The stud then slipped back through the rubber, again with some red rubber grease to assist.

However, the main difficulty was getting the bottom of the two side bolts back in and through the lower stud hole. It took ages and was very fiddly - another person would have helped, as would being a contortionist, as it was awkward holding the bolt and washers in place on the outside whilst trying to get it through the stud hole on the inside of the boot, and then getting the nut to thread on whilst keeping the inner washer and earth wire in place.

As the inner rubbers are such a tight fit there is no way water can get past into the boot so I didn't use any black sealant - I just laced the outer rubbers with red rubber grease and they gripped the stud tight enough that they pushed up flush against the bodywork. Job done!
