Rebuilding my 1970 traveller anyone got any thoughts on wether to stick with lever arch dampers or go for the telescopic rear conversion

Refurbished exchange Armstrong lever-acting dampers are very reasonably priced. In combination with new high quality leaf springs (from Jones springs) and poly bushes I am very pleased with my rear suspension but it's a Tourer not a Traveller.

I can't see any reason for telescopic dampers, certainly not on a standard car. If your car's rear suspension is not functioning properly, the dampers may need topping up, or replacing, as Stephen suggested. Or an issue with tired leaf springs, damper link etc.

In the old days people used to carry a bag of sand in the back of their Travellers to dampen out the bounce. Standard dampers are fine unless you regularly carry heavy loads. I have carried 70 bricks in the back of my Traveller at one time.

I changed the rear damper oil for straight SAE40 with SAE30 in the front Armstrongs. It made a big difference , much less bouncy without being harsh and, I feel, a better ride and handling.
