Flies

I removed a dead fish from a pond today, about 10 seconds late about a dozen flies settled on it. Where are these flies waiting to land on such ? Incidentally if my dog does his poo, by the time I get a bag out to pick it up, flies are there. Where do they come from so quickly ?

I think it's the long period of warm weather allowing the flies to breed rapidly. The same things as you describe happen where I live. I don't think matters are helped by many households failing to separate their food waste into the food waste bin and leaving bins overfilled with the lids open. Not only does this cause an almighty stink in hot weather but it gives flies ready access to decaying food and surely attracts them. I have also noticed a huge increase in mice and they have been eating my fruit directly off the trees! A few Summers ago the flies were especially bad. I traced the plague of flies to a commercial food waste bin that had rusted allowing a lake of absolutely disgusting rotting liquid to accumulate underneath. My dog uses a concrete area of the garden and I find that if I wash down with disinfectant more frequently in hot weather that it does reduce the number of flies.

I think you are probably right Stephen, the messy habits of some human animals, along with the weather, must encourage the proliferation of flies !
