Are the chrome metal number plates found on 1958 mm at present it has a plastic one on and I'd like to get original one.

I don't know whether it was chrome originally on a 1958 or whether it was black but I am sure it was metal and not plastic. I bought a chrome one a while back and for once I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality. My car had a black metal one that rusted away decades ago. If you are interested in the details of what is original and what is not then the book "The Original Morris Minor" by Ray Newell is the definitive reference.

I bought this one: https://www.morrisminorspares.com/elect ... me-p829892

Hi Stephen,
Thanks for the info, one I have looks cheap and nasty, it's not even wired up, metal chrome would definitely look better, I'd like to try get a original one, will also check out that book. 🙏

The new one I linked to is still made by Lucas and marked England. As far as I can tell it is identical to an original except perhaps the number of bulbs. These number plate lamps were used on many different cars of the era. One possible difference is the number of bulbs. The new one has two bulbs. I think some of older ones only used one but I not sure about that......

Been looking in book I have and it does look like they were black, but I'll go with chrome as looks better.

Yes, the original ones were black painted and just one bulb. No harm in a bit of an update though

My old black metal number plate lamp leaked all the time despite new seals and was a rather awful thing. It corroded inside and out. The chrome lamp seems much more robust and it with two bulbs it is brighter as well. I think it looks good too even if it isn't strictly original.

I bought the black version because it was a brass lamp body, fitted with led bulbs too. They do both chrome and black.

Not cheap when you need two on a Traveller.
