I have bought a small sat nav holder but don't want it permanently stuck to my windscreen. There is space to mount it on the dashboard between the speedo and glove box lid so I was thinking of using a magnet to hold it on. I have found some magnetic rubber sheet https://e-magnetsuk.com/product/magnetic-rubber-sheet/ which I thought might work but the tech guy there is concerned that it might have an effect on the battery. It's just occurred to me that the speedo might be affected too...Any advice on whether this seems likely would be appreciated, as would feedback from anyone who has already used this method. Thanks!

That aside, I'm not sure that it will hold the weight of the Holder, plus the device, whether Satnav or Phone. It's designed to hold signs on the outside of a car door etc, not a device acting to pull it down and away from the surface.

However, I fail to see why any magnet, no matter what strength, will affect the Car Battery, or are you speaking about a battery in the device?
If you're replacing the suction cup with the magnet, it's going to be a couple of inches from the device so I don't believe it will affect any components in it.

As to the Speedo, the Speedo works on a magnetic drag cup, spinning around inside it; it shouldn't be affected by a stationary magnetic field a few inches away.
If it was a magnetic Compass however, that's an entirely different matter.

Far simpler to get a Phone Spider, and hang it from the windscreen ventilator slot.

@geoberni Thank you! I’ve fixed the link. Yes - it was the car battery he was talking about. I see what mean about the magnetic sheet pulling down. I’ve never heard of the spider but am off to investigate…

why not just stick the suction mount where it is in your picture?

@Bill_qaz Hi Bill, it’s not actually a removable suction pad, but a very sticky permanent backing.

OH, sorry I thought it was suction like my garmin.
They hold very secure with a flick over lever to create the suction.

OMG, that sounds like the sort of comment you'd get from a 'Saturday Boy' in certain Electronics retailers....

Here's my Spider in the car... they're not so good to hang a phone from a modern car vent as they can heat the phone up in the winter, but ideal in the Minor vents.

@Bill_qaz I thought it was going to be a large suction cup but it’s a super sticky gel pad. The description says that it is ‘earthquake proof, not to hurt the phone’ so maybe I should have guessed

Having a sat-nav suction cup fail while driving, resulting in a sat nav slamming into your knee is a very painful experience (let alone dangerous).

The magnet idea is interesting but, I feel based on knee pain you would definitely want an extremely strong magnet to avoid such things happening.

How big is your sat nav 42" wide screen

Geoberni, that is a nice Tudor heater control you have there. An aftermarket heater I presume?
