My heater has been bench tested and yet another item that I can tick off as working. It’s had a little furry friend around it and needs a good general cleanup.

I’ve looked on YouTube and cannot seem to find any restoration details on it. I can’t seem to figure out how the switch is removed from the plastic cover amongst other things.

Can anyone tell me if there’s an exploded diagram and what sort of Smiths Heater I have as there seem to be a few!

What year is your car, is the heater switch the variable speed round one or the single speed silver toggle switch with the lever operated air distribution control flap?

It’s from a 1957. The switch is variable speed, just one single round switch on the front of it

The switch is held in place by a small grub screw on mine but from memory there is also a version with a push stud like the knobs on the dashboard. If it breaks, as the Bakelite can be brittle, there are replacements available usually found on a Landrover site.

The full parts lists in pdf are available for Series 3 & 5 cars online. Just search for AKD 3541 and AKD 3542.

These books are respectively titled Mechanical Service Parts List and Body Service Parts List. You need both as, for example, Electrical bits is in the Mechanical list and for some reason, the Heater is in Body

Having these lists is useful for working out change points by vehicle chassis number, or simply knowing changes in part number because the original item was no longer available.
For example, there were 4 different knobs used on that heater.
