I was examining the ceiling light when I removed it from my donor car; particularly the switch operation. The contacts seem to remain in contact regardless of the switch position, at least well enough to keep the light on in my opinion. I might be able to shift one plate far enough to one side to create the needed gap, just wondering if that was a normal thing.

Interior lamps can differ a little but follow the same basic principle.
1 - The Supply, doesn't matter whether Pos or Neg Earth car, this is the one that comes in from the fuse.
2 - This end of the lamp is the Earth connection, the terminal with the wire fitting is to connect the cable that earths via the door switch (if fitted).
3/3A - This is the switch on the light, if it's not touching the Earth End, then the lamp is controlled by the door switches. If the Switch is connecting to the Earth terminal of the lamp, then it's connecting to earth via a screw or short cable to the body shell.
