Replacing Gearstick Gaiter Tip

Post by svenedin »

This seemingly simple job can be very annoying and challenging.

I had a torn rubber gaiter. In the past other mechanics had drilled multiple extra holes when they couldn't line up the proper holes......

I simply could not line up ANY of the screws with the holes in the gearbox shroud underneath the carpet. I struggled for what seemed like an age starting to sweat and get very frustrated. This tip is credit to the young mechanic, Reuben, at Morris Minor Workshop.

Line up the screw holes with small screwdrivers. You can poke about until you find the hole. Then take the screwdrivers out one by one and put the screws in. Job done in 5 minutes!!!! Saved me a great deal more frustration. A small crosshead screwdriver is ideal because it can punch another hole in the carpet. It doesn't matter, the hole is tiny and hidden anyway.

Another tip, the front of the gaiter clamping plate is marked "F".
