Spluttering

Post by Maria1959morris »

So have a 1959 morris minor that i think at some point has had austin a35 or so engine fitted due to fact it has mechanical fuel pump on bottom left of engine I find when starting although the car has not failed to start but getting bit harder to and driving it's bit spluttery and taking a while to clear what I'm thinking is coukd it be the mechanical fuel pump if so I'd prob look to getting blanking plate and blanking the mechanical pump off and fit new electric one uts always had the mechanical pump and always been splutters until warmed up and driving a little bit but trying to improve little any suggestions thanks forgot mention always had electronic ignition as well thanks

IF you are sure it is the mechanical fuel pump you have three choices: replace the mechanical fuel pump with a new one, repair the old pump with a rebuild kit or as you suggest, blank off the mechanical fuel pump aperture and go to the standard Minor system of an SU electric fuel pump. The type you need is AUA66. This is also available with electronic replacement of the contact breakers. If you want to buy the electronic version it must be the correct polarity for your car i.e positive or negative earth. I believe the diaphragm in mechanical fuel pumps can fail (it can in electric ones too) and this is bad news with a mechanical pump as it over-fuels the engine.

If I were you I'd stick with the mechanical option because it is simple and very reliable.

Repair links: requires you to positively identify the model of the old pump and then buy and fit a rebuild kit such as (for example but you must make sure it is the right one):

3 options....

Choice is 2...

(I'll lock the door as I leave)
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

It's the simplest option and the cheapest. If the car has run for many years with a mechanical pump we don't even know if the electrical connections for an electric pump work or are even still there. A rebuild kit for the existing pump ensures the pump is compatible.
