Hopefully my engine will be back soon and it will be delivered on a pallet.

The difficulty is, the pallet is too wide for the legs of the engine hoist to fit around it.

We could tilt the engine upright on the pallet and slide it towards the edge. Then slide the engine off onto some sizeable pieces of timber as close to the same height as the pallet as possible. Remove the pallet and then the engine hoist can be manoeuvred around the engine.

Although the Morris engine is not particularly heavy, I am not very strong since a very serious accident some years ago and neither is my assistant.

How would other people approach this? Maybe just invite some stronger people around to lift it off the pallet and onto the floor? Or does my plan sound reasonable?

Sounds reasonable, if you are careful but, if a few strong-arm pals are available why not use them as well?
Best to be safe than sorry with things like backs.

I move engines around on a sack barrow. Its quite easy to shuffle and engine onto one and then strap it to the sack barrow so it does not fall off.

The 2 of you manoeuvre the engine to the corner of the pallet and then bring the hoist in at the corner, rather than square on?
Of just manoeuvre it off the pallet onto some packing, old blankets, etc, and then hoist it from that.

Use a longer rope and with the crane legs against the pallet it will come toward the crane, then re-sling when its closer. An old tyre on floor at the edge of the pallet is a useful cushion in case it tumbled off the edge.

Thanks chaps. When we loaded the engine on the pallet for it to go off to be refurbished there was no hurry so I could get some help. When the engine comes back I am going to be too excited to get it back in the car to wait long for assistance! It's been tough messing about working on the car for weeks on end when the weather is just so glorious for a bimble about in my tourer!
