I am in the process of fitting a hood cover in the fasteners kit is a ‘lift dot’ top&flat plate to fix the hood to the side of the car,
The fasteners for the hood at the moment have the normal stud fasteners,
Do I really need to use the lift a dot fasteners or will the normal stud version suffice? They just seem a bit of a faff to fix to the hood cover

What do you consider to be a NORMAL stud?
I've only ever experienced the lift the dot fixings.
Maybe you can post a photo?

There are only 2 lift a dot fasteners in the kit, the rest are press stud fittings

As I understand it (certainly for a Series 2)...
There are four sets of simple male/female studs to neatly secure the "wings" of the hood cover underneath the folded down frame (two sets per side).
The external lift the dot fittings secure the front of the hood bag to the body-mounted peg that otherwise secures the front lower edge of the hood.
It is a beefier fastening than a plain stud, and gives a degree of tautness and greater security to the bag, just as does the one on the hood.
This all leads me to believe that you have no pegs, due to a previous owner having replaced them with simple studs, along with their mates on the hood. You can stay with these if it works for you, but your kit may contain only enough studs for the inside.
East Sussex Minors stock the pegs as CONV110. Plus CONV109 lift-the-dot fasteners for the hood.

Thanks for that Mike, on inspection that’s what appears to have been done the dot fasteners have been replaced with stud fasteners, I might replace them with new dot fasteners
Thanks again

I've just remembered there are two further stud sets on the inside of the car. These are near the bottom rear of the window, where they seal the hood at this corner. Virtually in line with the external peg.
So I'd imagine the usual bag fixing set comprises six stud sets plus two lift-the-dots. Obviously they expect the peg to still be on the car.
If you do buy a pair of ESM pegs, remember you'll need the right nut and washers too.
