I know this has been done quite a few times but...
On Meggie who has a 1275 in good order coupled to to type 9 5 speed I have rebuilt the carb which is a HIF 44 the mixture is right and the timing is right, she is never driven hard rarely going over 3K revs and after all thisvi am lucky to get over 30MPG I also only use E5 petrol

What type of journeys do you do? Short journeys, especially in Winter (the engine never really properly warms up) are never good for fuel consumption. Unlikely to make much difference but check your spark plugs are clean and properly gapped. High electrical demand in Winter (heater, any screen demister, headlamps, wipers) all increase fuel consumption because the dynamo has to work hard. Also worth considering whether you are hauling around excessive weight in the boot, e.g far too many tools and spares!

All the plugs are clean and correctly gapped
She has a alternator conversion with limited demand all lighting apart from headlights is LED, most journeys a minimum of 30 miles

Are there long periods between your fillings?
As I've recounted on another recent thread, petrol does evaporate, perhaps at a rate of a litre every six weeks.
So a refill to brim can compromise an element of replacing this, distorting your mpg calculations. (Plus the remnant fuel doesn't work very well!)
But if your measurement was based on fills only hours, days or even a few weeks apart, this effect can be disregarded.

Check none of the brakes are binding....and tyres correctly inflated.

I have to admit I have never measured mine either, even when I was an impoverished student!

Impoverished or no, fuel was cheaper back then. For the record, I get 41 -43 mpg but that is a 948cc engine. I might expect a bigger engine, like the OP's 1275cc, to use more fuel. Of course, the better the condition and tune of the engine and ignition system, the more economical the car is on fuel.

Thanks for the replies I do get lots of smiles to the mile but do some longish journeys and would like to make them a bit more economical. The brakes gave recently been changed and are not bidding, dhebis also our only car and does get used regularly
