Front windscreen rubber

I'm attempting to fit a new rubber to the front screen - early 1000 and need to know whether the two piece chrome insert should be fitted before or after the screen is back in place. I've read a previous post on this topic which suggests with this type it should be done first. I've attempted to do this but its proving difficult!! All the books I have show the latter type being fixed once the screen is in. Any advice would be most welcome.

If it is the stainless steel type of finisher then it should be fitted
before the screen ,complete with rubber, is fitted to the car. If it is
the later 'plastic chrome' type finisher then it should be fitted after
the screen is back on the car, there is a special tool available for this
job. I know it is a difficult job on the stainless steel type but I
watched the expert fit my new screen in this way whilst refusing
any assistence and making it look easy!!

Yes it is the stainless type. Are you saying it should be fitted to the rubber before this is fitted to the screen. At the moment I've fitted the rubber to the screen and am now trying to fit the insert!

you've done well just fitting the rubber, i had big problems with it and got the RAC to do it for me. they done a brilliant job with no rips in the rubber. guess what? i did not have the stainless when the rubber was fitted, so now it sounds like ive got more problems with it.
