Fuel pumps, new and old style

Post by Onne »

I was working on a mate's car today, a Morris 10 that is, from 1933, and replaced the fuelpump with a morris minor one. A modern pump without points. Problem is, I can't get it to work. I think somebody might have accidently turned the car into -ve earth. Yet the old pump worked, but kept burning up the points! Should I just turn it back to +ve earth by turning around both batteries?

PS Car is fed by two 6V batteries, creating 12V (in 1933!)

Just helping out an elderly friend, who is just 2 years younger than the car!

Hi Onne,

I've just had a quick look at the Burlen site
http://www.burlen.co.uk/burlen-user/def ... 1#pumpspec

For a 1933 Moris 10, there's 1 version of the pump with points (+ve & -ve earth)
For the electronic verison there's two (one for each).

I'm sure that it was +ve earth - changeing should be easy (need to re-polarise the dynamo), chack the radio (?)

The old MG's used the same battery system.

All the best (you & Elisabeth)

Just as I thought then! Would this also explain why the car's dynamo isn't charging at the moment, if it is still +ve earth? This because the ignition (thus dynamo) keeps being alight!

Elisbeth will be ready by, hopefully, the end of the week!
