Can anyone tell me please. Is the heatshield in picture original? It's 1098 and is it the correct way around? Or should it be protecting the float chamber?

Possibly, although all those I have seen shield the float bowl as well as heat can cause the fuel to evaporate from there. You might want to think about routeing the fuel line away from the manifold on the other side of the air filter.

It's not original as there was no heat shield fitted originally. The Grumpy's heat shield is quite often fitted and this does protect the float bowl: https://www.morrisminorspares.com/fuel- ... ly-p830677

Or there are others such as this one on my car. Sometimes they are home-made heat shields.

Edit: Actually, looking at your picture again that isn't a heat shield at all! It's the bracket to guide the throttle cable.

Thanks it an older picture, I've replaced the braided pipe with ethanol resistant rubber line and it's re- routed behind the wiper motor and around to the float bowl, away from the engine.

No problem. In 35 years I had never experienced fuel vaporisation. The established wisdom was that some cars seem to suffer from it whereas others never do and it was never very clear why this was. Then in Summer 2024 I started having problems with fuel vaporisation so I fitted a Grumpy rising fuel pipe heat shield and a carburettor/float bowl heat shield (not Grumpy). The problem completely went away and has not returned. I think it is related to changes in the fuel.

Thanks Stephen, I've never suffered with vapour lock, I changed the fuel line and routing after seeing issues of braded pipe cracking without being visible until leaking. The original metal feed line to the pump is clipped to the bulkhead and has not been an issue. As you say maybe different fuels or exhaust temperatures cause the issues.
I don't intend to fit heat shield just glancing at the picture mistakenly thought it had one but fitted the wrong way around.
Just preparing for visiting my car to do some jobs, good luck with your engine refurbishment.

I've only ever once had fuel vapourisation in a Morris and that was on a sidevalve car where the metal feed pipe runs up the bulk head past the exhaust pipe which is very close. Of course, without the water pump, the car runs hotter anyway. Up until now, never had any issues with the a series unit - touch wood.

The worst I ever get is a rapid ticking of the petrol pump in very hot weather, but it never translates into running problems......
