Just a quick question, should the indicators on my 1968 traveller be self cancelling ?

Yes, though someone else will need to reply saying which bit you fiddle with to get them self-cancelling again as I don't remember off hand

Yes, as Chief says, they should cancel.

There is a little bolt with a square head fitted to the steering column adjacent to the indicator mechanism. This trips a mechanism (one for left and one for right) that releases the arm back to its central position. Various things can go wrong. If it is not cancelling in either direction, chances are that the square headed bolt is incorrectly adjusted or might be absent. A variation on this is that the steering column might be incorrectly installed so the the square headed bolt is at the wrong angle (eg it might be up to 180 degrees displaced) or the alignment might be out.

As already said, yes they should self-cancel. A number of things can go wrong and stop the self-cancel from working. The mechanism of the indicator assembly can become gummed up with ancient grease, the "peg" on the steering column can wear or most likely that peg is no longer properly aligned. This can happen if the indicator assembly has been replaced or the outer steering column has been moved.

It is a fiddly job to get the self-cancel to work again. To do so, you need to remove the horn push (disconnect battery first). There is a risk of breaking the horn push due to old brittle plastic. Then undo the large steering wheel nut and remove the steering wheel. You need a thin wall box spanner to undo the large steering wheel nut 1 and 5/16" AF. With the steering wheel off you can remove the 3x screws and lift off the plastic indicator assembly shroud.

Now you can see the mechanism of the indicator assembly. Jack up and properly support the front of the car so both front wheels are off the ground. Put the steering wheel back on and indicate left then turn the wheel as if you were turning left. Look for the little peg that contacts the self cancel cam on the indicator assembly and repeat for turning right. Adjust the peg (it has a tiny locknut) or the orientation of the outer steering column as necessary. Clean old grease off and replace.

Thankyou for all the replies - I spent a productive afternoon in the garage (with the heavy rain beating down on the galvanised sheet roof !), followed the advice, peg needed adjustment…. now operating perfectly in both directions.
