Wiper parking (again)

Hi,

I've forgotten how you adjust the parking on the wipers.... They currently stop at a nice 45 degree angle unless I'm really quick with the switch

You loosen the screws holding the 'dome' on top of the wiper unit
after first marking its relationship to the top plate with a pencil and
then you turn it small amounts at a time until the parking is where
you want it. Then just tighten the screws.

Or:- lift the wiper arms off the screen (they should stay that way) start and stop the wipers, remove the arms from the splines and reposition on the spindles at the park position.

PLEASE DON'T TRY THAT! That is the only way to get the wipers dragging into the bonnet

I'm sorry but it works and is easy. Perhaps my explanation was lacking. In fact later Lucas motors did not have that adjustable parking switch and that is the recommended method of setting the park position.

It certainly isn't the recommended way of setting the park position on the Minor.
If the wipers park at 45 degrees, then when you move them on the spindles, they will swipe 45 degrees onto the bonnet

The motor has a worm and wheel which pulls / pushes a cable. The cable has 'teeth' to act like a rack in the wiper wheel boxes. The action of the wheel boxes is basic rack and pinion. Moving the wiper will just affect how far clockwise and anticlockwise they go and (apart from wrecking the bonnet) will not affect where the motor stops. The motor needs to stop at the changeover point between pushing and pullind - Willie's explanation is correct (as always) regarding what to do.

Maybe you were reffering to how to get the wipers to sweep the screen area properly 'when the Motor DOES park at the lowest position' - that's the only guess I can make from your explanation.

Hello Ray,
if the wiper motor hasn't been messed with and the blades are in the wrong position then it is easier to reposition the arms. In fact there is only one park position and the cover shouldn't need adjusting at all once set correctly.
I was assuming in the context of the original question that was the case.

What about series II (thus splitscreen models) wipers? The one in front of me always does as told, the passenger side however, doesn't. It's alright for months, and then suddenly, it goes on the bonnet, or stops working completely! I also know, my car has got a different setup compared to the 1000s, my wiper moter sitting behind the dash.
Anyone?

In which case you noticed the comment that the only way to get them to stop in the correct place is by careful use of the switch. Therefore this means they go to the bottom of the screen, but they don't park there. ;)

Parking problems are fairly common as the cut out in the electrical pick up becomes worn. This has 2 effects - firstly that the conducting disk can wear through or become open circuit meaning they need the switch on or they will just stop, or the other effect that the beginning and end of the cut-out 'migrate' due to wear and metalic deposits onto the non-conductive part.

ONNE.....it would appear that one of your wheel box assemblies is
slipping. Difficult to reach but if you ascertain that there are no
loose screws etc on these items then it is possible to disconnect
the gear wheel from the drive cable and turn it through 180 degrees
so that you will have unworn teeth ready for the next 50 years.
( I mean the gear wheel on the wheel box, not the main motor unit
gear wheel)
