Our 'new to us' MM has a 25D distributor with Lumenition Magnetronic electronic ignition.

From what I have read this appears to be a reliable setup, not as good as 'Optronic' for some reason but cheaper when purchased. I don't know if it is still sold. Anyway, it works.

But...on the high tension lead from coil to distributor there is a lump labelled 'Spitfire Multispark'. What is this? There is an ad for one on Ebay and it is described as a 'spark improver'. Is it worth keeping?

Back to the distributor, I cannot remove the rotor. Before I break it Is there a clever trick or is it simply jammed?

I would leave the spark improver in place.
All it is is a additional gap in the lead which means that it has to have extra voltage to pass/jump over, that extra voltage is carried over to the spark plug so improving the spark at the plug.
Sometimes the rotor arm does stick on the shaft. If it is all working ok leave trying to remove it until you have a spare from Distributer Doctor just in case the rotor breaks.

IMHO, The Spark Improver is Snake Oil.

Gapping the Plug a little greater will increase the power of the spark, simply because the energy of the collapsing magnetic field generated by the coil has to build up more before it jumps the gap.
I don't see why making that energy jump 2 gaps in series will give an improved spark at the plug where you actually want/need it....

How it allegedly generates 5 sparks seems like complete fabrication. The collapsing magnetic field is going to dissipate at the first spark.
It's a bit like saying an Athlete in the Long Jump can get further by doing the Triple Jump.
Triple Jump has a place as an athletic event, but what's the point of a Triple Jump to cross a gap?
If you're jumping a water filled ditch, you can't land on the water twice on the way over...

For me the Bottom Line on this subject is that if it really worked, why didn't Ignition System designers have this across the Ignition systems of all Internal Combustion engines many decades ago.
WWII was a great period of innovation increasing the power of aero engines, the greatest minds of the Allied and Axis Powers didn't come up with the idea?
Why not...?


The same person/company also heavily promotes the 'pellets in the tank' miracle cure for all the ills of modern fossil fuels.
They claim

It simply is placed into the petrol tank of any car or motor cycle and then only 95 unleaded fuel needs to be used. Lead was put into petrol in 1936 to stop the knock this product was developed in 1941 for the royal air force.

Lead, in the form of Tetraethyllead was widely added to fuel from the 1920s, so was Ethanol.
Octane rating of automotive fuel in the 1930s was around 70; aviation fuel used by the Allies in WWII was 100/120 Octane.
The RAF did not use and sort of magic additive pellets.
