Hi everyone
Please can anyone recommend a decent grease gun and suitable grease to use in it? I was given a grease gun and a tub of grease but both are rubbish

I recommend a Wanner grease gun and the use of Castrol General Purpose grease.
I have had my Wanner grease gun for as long as I can remember and it has and still does give good service.

Wot he said. Remember, gravity is your friend to fill it completely.

Mine was bought from a local national store.It has a big spring inside and took two people and three tools to shut it with grease in.

I think you must have unscrewed the wrong end.
I don’t own a Wanner grease gun but they all have similarities.
Pull back the black handle and lock the chain in the extended position.
Unscrew the canister at the Trigger end.
Fill the canister, screw back together and release the locked black handle.

As a point of interest, there was consensus here, that the steering rack should be oiled, not greased.
If you follow that edict, you will need 2 qty grease guns, or an oil gun if you prefer.

That's the recommendation in service data, not a consensus.
10 strokes of EP90 using a pressure gun every 12,000 miles - do not over lubricate.

The grease gun supplied with the original car tool kit was one of these, a very popular brand in the era. I inherited one from my dad when clearing his garage out.. Tecalemit.
They're often on ebay.

As no one man ever wrote a company service manual, I can safely assume that a team reached consensus before publication.
But I am pleased my point was noticed by the posts author.
Oil not grease on the steering rack, well, that was the consensus.

Even better for the steering rack is a mixture of oil and grease.
Straight oil migrates to the hollows of the tie rod bellows of the rack and stays there. The oil and grease mixture stays were it contacts the rack and pinion.
For better lubrication contact add extra grease nipples to the rack and pinion housing.

Are the nozzles for grease and oil guns different? The last time I used a grease gun filled with oil to fill my steering rack, very little, if any ,of the oil went into the nipple and made a right mess. Is there any merit in buying one of these cheap couplers for the job?

As for grease I have been using Castrol Lithium Grease in my trunnions, hand brake cables, universal joints and ball joints for over forty years. The nozzle on my lever grease gun needs replacing though.

I can't comment on that coupler, but I find an oil gun works well on the steering rack nipple. The only problem is that oil gradually leaks out of the gun unless it is stored upright, with the nozzle at the bottom.....
