Good idea Chris, not heard from you for a while, hope things are ok.

Yes they appreciate the help.Unlike us they can't go yo a shop so rely on what food and water they find whatever the weather. Try to help as they were here first and enjoy vour dwindling wildlife.

Yes we can feed them where I live but unfortunately this summer they definitely don’t need water left out.
Love to see them coming and stealing the dog food
and dogs just sit and watch them. Then they bath in there big water bowl. Love the oops I typed a naughty word and wrens. We have too many sparrows though .

We have no greattits in our area.

On my shelf is a book entitled " AA Readers digest Book of British Birds" . It might just as easily be a reference to european birds as for every species there is a world map showing where the particular bird has its habitat. There are very few, if any singular British birds as such. What I do find interesting are those which frequent my feeding station. The various types of " Meise" ( ..oops I typed a naughty word) are all present at times but a bit of a coup; a few years ago I photographed a "crested oops I typed a naughty word", which, according to the book ( published in 1985) is only found in an area centred on Inverness in Scotland. With us it is known as a "Haubenmeise" and is also a bit rare it seems. Also seen quite often is a Nuthatch (Kleiber Spechtmeise) and a Lesser spotted Woodpecker which has, exceptially, a much less complicated German name of "Kleinspecht".

The big challenge is placing the feeding station where the red squirrels cannot get it. Actually, they always can if they want to but it is probaby too much effort for them.

Don't forget to leave food out for the birds & wildlife please.

Fresh water too.

Yes they don't get the luxury of going to tesco so they have to take what they can get.We can help.

Chris?.Glad they can depend on you.Most people do not realise ehst they have and have lost.

I have a robin who calls on me, who likes dry porridge oats and sultanas. There used to be a blackbird, who was often with him. Last September, both seemed to disappear (Perhaps an abundance of wild food). I think the robin, who now calls, could be the same one as before but the blackbird, who now shadows him, is another one. The original blackbird was as "Tame" as the robin (Both have come into the kitchen) but the new one is more timid. I remember the robin once flew so close, I felt his wings against my hair . The robin even chirps at me!! There are sparrows (Who nest in the pine end of the garage, behind the weather boards) and starlings and they sometimes take some food but the robin and the original blackbird were the most forward.

There are some squirrels who clear up what is left!!

Animals are anything but daft and I shall never forget the last cat, who adopted us. We found he liked classical music, especially if in front of a coal fire. He had ways of asking for both. He also liked watching Youtube, such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l70UhhNalqA. If he walked to the computer screen, it meant either he wanted music or Youtube. I first would put music on and if he sat in his box, that's what he wanted BUT, if he stayed by the screen, it meant he wanted Youtube. I found that he disliked Black Sabbath, as when they once appeared on the TV news, he got up and walked out, taking the long way around, so as not to walk past the TV.

Remember that episode of "Tales of the Unexpected" where the woman (played by Hillary ?) who believes stray cat is a classical music composer?

I have 2 cats, therefore. have to be mindful of where I bung bird, fox, squirrell food.

We have a resident colony of near-feral cats that, fortunately, are too lazy and content to chase our bird visitors or our sizable population of anoles! We have two sizable pileated woodpeckers nearby, several red tail hawks and swallowtail kites in addition to our ever present little chirpy birds. I feed two visiting raccoons every night; last night they enjoyed some oatmeal creme pies!
