Oil Filter Parts Clarification

Post by mogdobz »

Hello folks. I'm new to Minor ownership and have noticed a rather small leak from my oil filter.

In short: what are Purolator and Tecalemit oil filters? What sort or brand of rubber and felt rings can I get to fit in my normal oil filter? Would those above brands work alright?

In painfully pointless detail: I previously disassembled it as part of an oil change and replaced the filter, but noticed that there was no felt and no rubber ring in there. I had carefully removed the whole thing to preserve all parts in proper order and consulted the workshop manual on the correct way to reassemble it - but sans those rings, and hence it leaks very slowly.

Obviously I want to get the rings in, but this is the confusing part for new people! I usually get parts from ESM Morris Minors. Some things are listed for "Purolator" types, and some for Tecalemit - can anyone suggest which I might need? As far as I can tell I just have the normal oil filter for a bog standard Series IV 1098cc A-Series engine.

The filter head should have the name of the filter make cast on its top face so as to make identification easier.
Here is a link to oil filter parts:-

A photo of the filter head posted on here would be of help.

Not speaking from personal experience, since my car already had a Spin On Filter conversion when I brought him.
But here's the illustrations from the original Parts Manual.
The one in the centre is Tecalemit, either side are Purolator versions. If your car has the Oil Filter Blockage Sensor, I think that was only made by Purolator, the one on the left.

That should enable you to identify what you have.

The Moss site I sometimes find a little awkward in it's configuration; for example regarding the oil filters, it shows the 2 different assemblies and numbers the actual Filter Element as index 100 and 125 depending on which housing make. Which would make the reader thing they are different.
But that is actually the one thing that is the same in both housings, Pt No 8G 684.

At least with the original catalogue this is immediately clear.

As regards the MOSS parts list clarity of part numbers:-
If the parts list is read correctly and followed through the oil filter element (whether felt or paper) part number will be found to be the same for item No: 100 & item No: 125. There should be no confusion.
The MOSS on line parts list is in my opinion a good parts list and has some very good exploded parts diagrams. Not all readers have access to factory parts lists.

That's fab, thanks all. I've identified mine as a Perculator. Soon enough it will be time to take it apart and stick those rubber bits in there where they belong! :tu1: :D
