Can someone advise me on the best / widest tyres that can be safely fitted .
Thank you

I suppose it depends on what width your "van size rims" are? Standard wheels for a 6cwt van are only 3.0 inch wide (the same as a car) and should really be fitted with 145 section tyres. A small number of later vans were manufactured to 8cwt specification and these were fitted with a wider (4.5 inch) rims. These wider rims can be fitted with 155 or 165 section tyres perfectly safely and some owners will perhaps go wider still although there is probably little to be gained.

I don’t know about best but 165 is the widest that will fit on the front with the wider LP917 rims and drum brakes, the tyre gets close to the upright, I don’t know if disc brake conversions make a difference, it shouldn’t.

I run 155 80r14 on van rims-.these fit very nicely and look right. I have had this size on standard rims and found they wandered a little compared to the wider van rims
