Hi all
Please help with this as I am at my wits end.
Under load I get reports from passengers of a strong smell of petrol coming into the car.
Ar first I thought it may have Been due to there mot being a gasket on the sender unit and petrol weeping at the union of the fuel pipe and tank, these have both been replaced and all is petrol tight.
The engine is running rich as the plugs are quite black, I have weakened the mixture on the adjustment screw but this is only affecting the idling ( which has helped as I never needed the choke to start before but I do now)
I have been led to believe that to weaken the mixture I will need to change the needle wjichni where I am stuck as yo which needle to put in?
The current needle is a BFY the engine is a unmodified 1275 marina engine with a cone air filter. The timing chain breather is connected into the inlet stub on the carb.
TIA
Steve

Check the float level ( leaking float )

What might help is Mintylamb

http://www.mintylamb.co.uk/suneedle/

not much difference between BFY and BDL...

P.S.
When you say " inlet stub " , would that be the inlet manifold or air filter side of the carb ?

Hi John thank you for tve reply, I will check through the float assembly, the breather is connected on stub close to the inlet.
All the best

If it is the float letting too much petrol through would I be correct in assuming that the excess fuel is being pushed out of the overflow and this is what the strong smell of petrol is coming from?

If the level is out the mixture could be rich ( or weak)..
If the float has stopped floating , it will overflow..
