In my experience (commercials mainly) an awful lot of them have been removed, pesumably for that reason. I only found out they existed at the National this year when I saw one fall off a car...

heat shield

Post by Willie »

If you are referring to the one on the passenger side floor then No
many of them are omitted, probably as they form yet another place
for unseen rust to flourish!! and you need all the heat you can get
in the winter too!! If you are referring to a heat shield on the
manifold then yes, it would be a desirable addition if you are willing
to do the work. Bear in mind that the expert on A series engines,
Vizard, reckons that cooling the inlet manifold only adds about 1BHP
(if I remember correctly) to the power so the real advantage would
be in preventing fuel vapourisation which can be a problem on the
Minor, especially with the modern lead free stuff. Look at the item
on an MGB, it is lined with Asbestos type material and involves more
work than you would expect but does the job. I refer to the early
MGBs,(1963-1973) dont know about the later types.
