When our Traveller was restored 15 years ago (not by us) all the joints between the wood and the bodywork were sealed with Dum Dum Putty. The Dum Dum has now started to go hard and come away in parts and needs replacing. Dum Dum Putty hasn't been available for a while so what do people recommend to replace it? 3M Body Caulking seems to get mentioned a lot but have newer and possibly better products come along since?
Also, do I need to remove all the old Dum Dum or just what I can get to, and what is the best way to remove it without damaging the woodwork or the paintwork?
This will be my first venture doing anything with the bodywork beyond washing it so I'm a bit nervous about damaging the pristine paintwork in particular.

In my opinion Dum Dum I no good any more. It dries out and cracks. It was probably the only thing available to coach builders in the old days. The first replacement wood I did in the 1980's I used Dum Dum and it did not last. The second time around I used the stuff they use to seal gutters with. It is black and comes in a tube, it is softer and easily applied. It remains flexible and seals the joints thoroughly. Excess can be cleaned off using white spirit. The wood I replaces some time in the 1990's still does not leak through the sealed joints. Trust me, no one will ever know.

This is what I used on my Traveller between the timber frame and bodywork and also to seal the wing joints front and rear. It's a little to thick as it comes but it stretches out easily to give just the right sized bead.
