Finally got the '57 Moggy on the road. Its been neck end of 12 months since purchasing it during which I've been doing quite a few jobs on it to bring it what I would class as being "road worthy". I believe it to be an MG Midget 1275 engine - RKM1126E - but unsure as to ancillaries. I have found a receipt within the previous owners bundle for a gasket set for a HS2 carb but it states 948cc 60-6 and 1098cc 62-70. Have I got a carb that is too small for the 1275 engine? Should I be looking for a larger carb or twin carb setup? Any advice greatly appreciated.

BMC fitted the SU HS2 1 1/4" carb to the 1500cc 'B' Series engines and did not encounter any problems so to me that indicates that the 1 1/4" carb is adequate for the 1275cc engine.

Appreciate the quick response Phil. The moggy trundled along at 50 for a good mile (slightly smaller aftermarket wheels so probably 45) but on return to home, although the brakes were binding, I just wanted some assurance that the carb was adequate for the 1275 engine. I did wonder whether the previous owner had just stuck the 1000 carb onto the 1275 as some of the history is unclear.

Coming back from a car show a chap down the road who has a 1275 traveller told me he was struggling to keep up with my 1098 traveller. We compared motors and I have HIF38 cab and larger bore exhaust his was running a standard carb and exhaust, He has since changed his to a hs4 carb and a larger bore exhaust and told me there is a marked improvement in performance.
