Putting new mounts on gear box 1098 have all bolts loose
I had engine out and ready to go in would it be easier to steady the gear box when cross member is dropped if I put engine back in first. Or is there an advantage to doing them while engine out.

If the engine is not in, then there is nothing to support the gearbox, so you would have to either balance it on a jack or perhaps tie it up with a rope. Of course, where you are, you could just as easily remove the box completely, fit the new mounts and mate the box and engine before refitting.

Yea I know what you mean but I only removed rad to take engine out , engine is ready so maybe your right with engine in gear box be easier to balance on a jack.

Got engine in new mounts on engine and gearbox
Fitted new Borg & beck clutch kit all new gear linkage
Tried today getting gears and changing 90% better have just we rattle kit to fit on stick. BUT only problem is sitting ticking over there’s a bit of noise then when push clutch in it stops , it even slightly effects engine revs .
Is it likely to be gearbox bearing. And have me over thinking now can you put new thrust in back to front although I am sure it’s right but got doubts now. Any thoughts. Thanks

it sounds like the gearbox but all gearboxes make some noise particularly when unloaded try driving it under load if the noise gets significantly worse under load in gears 1 to 3 my guess would be layshaft bearings, they seem to be the first to go.

myself without a press etc or is it a big job deep in the box for a professional .

You do not need a press to replace the layshaft needle roller bearings.
The biggest job in replacing the layshaft and needle roller bearings is extracting the layshaft outer bearing circlip.
The inner circlip is left in place.
The new needle roller bearings are slightly longer than the original BMC items and so do not require the outer circlip to be fitted.
The new needle rollers bearings are now kept in place by the inner circlips and the thrust washers.

Thanks , don’t be upset but , that is the first bearing in the plate at front of gear box behind clutch fork arm or do I need to go deeper . Ie if I remove fork and plate behind fork will I have access to it. Apart from new oil seal anything else while at it would be required. When I felt the gearbox shaft when chsngiutj there was maybe 4mm movement hold it out at the spline which I thought was acceptable but wish I had looked into it further at the time. ,,, (. every day is a school day now. )
Thanks for advice. Since clutch went in the gears are lovely to change , maybe I am expecting too much as I have just about changed everything to new that can be changed. Would like the engine to die a bit less when I engage clutch but then again I have it ticking over very sweet maybe too sweet.

What I have described above is about the layshaft needle roller bearings. The first bearing is a ball bearing and supports the first motion shaft.
You will have to strip the gearbox to access and replace the layshaft needle roller bearings as you will if you replace the first motion shaft ball bearing.

Thank you might be a job on back burner until I get someone local I can pull the box out and get them to do whether it needs. At the minute it’s fine just a bit of a whine not that noticeable when driving and it’s bare floor etc throughout no door seals or anything so any noise is heard.
