Hi guys

Want to get my steering wheel off so I can replace the indicator switch. (traveller 1969)The snag is that its a huge nut that holds the steering wheel. Anybody who knows exactly what size of a socket wrench that fits ?

Cannot tell you the proper size as I ground an old spanner to fit
BUT do not totally remove the nut when you have loosened it.
When you release the wheel from its splines it will come up and
hit you in the face otherwise!

1 5/16 AF. From memory, 33mm does the job too - I'll check in a bit when I can get to my tools!

1 5/16 AF is thge correct size. Thanks to various subscribers who answered this question for me a few weeks ago!

That's usually the problem in my cars too.

Its the same size as a mini one so if you having trouble locating one try your local mini specialist.

of just go to the nearest halfords for a 33mm socket

I am using a 3/4 Whitworth-7/8 BSF socket which fits perfectly.Mine is a 1969 two door saloon but this shouldn't make any differnce.Socket cost £3 in Wimborne Market but any good secondhand tool store should have one

I think it is actually a 3/4" Ww as Robert syas. The 1 5/16" AF "fits" because it is just 13 thou bigger than the correct Whitworth tool. AF is probably easier and cheaper to come buy, but it is not really the right size.

I got a 1 5/16" for something ages ago, can't remember what now (can remember getting the dusty one from the back of the box as it had a much lower price stuck to it than the more recent stock ;) ), and it's just a really useful size to have. It not only did the whatever it was, but also Mini steering wheel nuts (though not, I noticed, 90s Coopers), Mini tower bolts, Minor steering wheel, etc.

A really handy socket to have in the box, even if it doesn't seem like it when looking at the price!

Yes - it's the biggest socket in my set - 3/4 Whit - and is invaluable on the Mini !

Surely you've also got a 1 1/2" extra deep socket too? Something I wish I had, as I could've saved a friend a few quid when his balljoints needed adjusting - I've had 2, both got nicked

Other than the steering wheel nut, crank pulley and rear hubs, I've never found anything extra large on a Minor though - More often it's medium or small obscure not in my toolbox size

haven't we missed the point - You don't need to take the steering wheel off to change the indicator switch!!

Although the cowling makes in very awkward to get at the screws

Can you explain how Roger, as Lee says the cowling really does get in the way but if you have found a way round it I would love to know.

I did wonder! But if the wheel comes off easily enough, it does make access much better. Best to take a battery lead off before starting - to avoid unwanted horn blowing incident.

My neighbours would love that they keep moaning about all the old cars anyway (miserable so-n-so's) it's not just us either, there's an MGBGT 5 doors 1 way, a triumph vitesse 7 or 8 houses the other way and the guy with the manta's at the bottom of the road
