I opened a can of baked beans yesterday, afterwards I washed the tin ready for disposal, however on giving the tin a second look, I thought what a nice well made item it was. Something often taken for granted, the humble tin can !

Well, plenty of cars were patched up for MOT's in the past with tin can metal slathered over with underseal - as many serious restorers have found subsequently!

My father used baked bean tins and Gun Gum as exhaust repairs. Worked well enough until the entire exhaust fell off. Even then he stopped to rescue the fallen exhaust only to see it run over by a lorry (true story). Car was an Austin 7 Ruby.

Was quite commonplace - I recall my father's mechanic telling him on more than one occasion that he would have to 'put a patch on the exhaust' for the MOT.
