I need to take the engine out of my 1970 MM 1000 Traveller and would like to solve/reduce the oil leak from the gearbox front cover, whilst the engine is out.
Can the gearbox front cover be replaced with the gearbox still in the place?

The front cover can be replaced with the engine out.
Are you going to replace the front cover with one with a lip seal?

You will also probably find some shims under the front cover which support the front bearing, ideally you should measure the depth of the recess in the new and old covers and adjust the shims if there is any difference.
