Have got engine running.

Post by Mark.stephenson485 »

Engine running but need to know about manifold.
On the top there is a hose connection what does this conect to.
Also onside of block there is a round thing and onto of it there is a connection for a hose where does it go?
Should my carburettor have a breather on it?

Please post pictures. From your description it sounds like you have a connection on the inlet manifold for a PCV valve and an oil separator can on the tappet cover. A pipe connects the two.

The alternative arrangement is to blank off the hole in the inlet manifold and connect the pipe from the oil separator can to a breather carburettor. I believe that was not an arrangement ever used during production of the Morris Minor but often used later as PCV valves can be temperamental and it was found to be more reliable.

Is it like this (carburettor missing in this photo)

Yes like your photo.
Pcv valve is incomplete, no cover no diaphragm.
Have sourced cover but cannot find repair kit

My carb is without breather pipe.
Can I put a t piece in to conect both pipes and conect it to base of air filter?
Or do I need carb with breather?

Ok. So the can on the tappet cover connects to a PCV valve on the manifold. There is a rubber diaphragm in the PCV valve. It is made of rubber and can go hard and stop working with age. Replacement diaphragms are available for the later design of valve (which is likely to be what you have).

Are you saying your PCV valve is missing and there is just a short open pipe on the inlet manifold? Or is there a pipe on the inlet manifold that has been blocked off?

I do not really understand what you mean by "both pipes"?

You cannot connect a pipe from the inlet manifold to the air filter! They would be sucking against each other.

If you have the PCV valve and it is not working (a genuine Smiths valve is expensive at around £75) you can put a ' T ' piece to join the pipe from the rocker cover (if vented) to the pipe from the oil separator attached to the front cam follower chest cover and run the joined pipes to the air cleaner. I would suggest that a non vented oil filler cap should be used.
If you use the ' T ' piece and pipe to the air cleaner you must block the manifold pipe with a suitable bolt.
There are cheaper valves available but I cannot vouch for their quality.
A photo of what you have would be helpful.

Agreed. In this case a picture would be most helpful in giving a definitive answer.
