My God mother's Minor

Post by Blaketon »

My mother's aunt had a new Minor 1000 sometime in the late 1950s. The attached photo came to light when the last of my mother's aunts and uncles died in 2020, aged 97. It was the only car she had but when she got married, her husband had a newer Minor (I remember that one) and they sold the older car. My mother says it was green but not dark green. Looking at my new (Birthday present) "Original Morris Minor" book, Sage green was one option. Does anyone have a picture of sage green? I can show my mother, who may recognise the colour. It may give us a clue, as to roughly dating the car by looking at when they colour was dropped. DVLA show the car is now more.

When the car was bought, the purchase was arranged via one of my Godmother's brothers in law. When he phoned her, to tell her he had found a car, he said there was one snag. My great grandmother was superstitious about green but my Godmother said "Oh never mind that" and her mother never said a word about it!!

Years later, when my mother's aunt and uncle came to visit my parents, I had the Traveller with me and my Godmother asked to try it for size (She had never said anything about any of my cars before) and I remember she said (She was well on the way to 90 at the time), "I could still drive this....I can't see over the bonnet of John's car.....I wish I'd never sold mine". I didn't really think about it but I wish I'd offered her to try it. She was more than capable; she was still helping out in an old peoples' home, when she was 85.....where lots of the residents were younger than she was (She had been a nursing sister).

This Minor Van is painted Sage Green. My Brother owned a 1958 Minor saloon in that colour some years ago too
