Wiring

Post by Mark.stephenson485 »

I have a red wire coming out the fuse board which goes into the dashboard.problem is that a fire burnt all the wiring in dashboard, I have replaced loom but have no idea where the red wire goes.
Is this the wire that supplies power to the speedo if so where does it go.

What year is your car?

On my car (1969), there is a red with white wire that goes to the panel light switch under the dashboard (the switch that turns the instrument lights on and off). This wire is plain red in earlier cars. That wire is live when the sidelights or headlights are on. It comes from the lighting switch though not the fusebox.

I'm guessing the wire you spoke of was not original. :-?
All original connections direct from the fuses are either Purple or Green; White in the case of the un-fused Ign Coil and Fuel Pump feeds.

My car has a Red connected to the fuse box, it's where a previous owner connected the radio.

All original Red wiring is for the Side Lights and Panel Lights (Speedo lighting); as Stephen correctly says, the Panel Lights colouring was later changed to Red/White.
Panel Lights connection was originally direct from the Lights Sw, later ones at a junction after the inline fuse (so I'm guessing that might be in the engine bay).
