Thermostat housing and gasket.

Post by philthehill »

As a result of reading in the latest edition of Minor Matters recommendations regarding the thermostat housing and gasket I make my own recommendations:-
If you want to be able to easily remove the thermostat housing I would advise that the three 5/16" through holes are drilled out to 3/8" and the studs liberally coated in Copperease.
Use the correct paper gasket lightly smeared in grease.
These are the best gaskets you can use:-

The best thing that can be done with the cork gasket is put it in the waste bin.

Yes, the housing is known to get stuck on the studs. Fortunately, when I had to take my thermostat housing off it came free quite easily. However, I agree with Phil about the cork gaskets - mine leaked immediately after fitting. So I replaced it with the type shown in the link above and it has been fine ever since (a few years now)
