Engine issue

Post by Classiccars »

Having recently had my engine refurbed I noticed a small oil leak from the head at the rear of the engine. The clutch which is OK has started slipping.Wondering if the oil would get in to the clutch. Also When the engine failed originally it was said in passing that it was possible the clutch my be oiled already as it poured out of the engine st the time. How possible are these two please.A new head gasket was fitted but are today's head gaskets any good.

Are you sure that the oil is coming from between the head and the block?
Is the rocker cover gasket leaking?
It is highly improbable that oil leaking from between the head and block would get into and onto the clutch.
If the rear crankshaft scroll seal was worn then there is a possibility that oil would get into and onto the clutch.
The use of a good quality head gasket gasket should cause no problems.
Assuming your engine is a small block unit i.e. 948cc/1098cc this is the gasket I would be using:-

Have you checked the clutch pedal clearance?

Hi its a 1500 engine with a 5 speed I believe type 9 gearbox.I also was not convinced by the oil leaking and affecting the clutch.I guess I will need the scroll seal you advsed and get that changed along with the clutch. If the scroll seal has wet the clutch would I need a clutch bearing as well as would not know if oil would affect that as well.I think the oil from the head rear left under the heater screw parts is from the gasket area but would have to look again.Saw an air bubble that's how I noticed it.Please can you advise if possible a clutch set to fit and a scroll seal if possible please .

So what kind of engine is it? The A-series was not made as a 1500cc.
1969 1098cc Convertible “Xavier” which I have owned since 1989.

Could you post a photo of the engine and include a close-up of any serial number, then we can make sure that we're talking about the correct engine and giving the correct advice. Thanks.

Whoever rebuilt the engine would know what engine they were working on ! Or maybe not ! Ask them.
The largest Mini engine was 1275cc, and would need a lot of modifications to fit. You really need to know what you’ve got, at least for future spares that might be needed.
Is it fitted in a Minor or something else?

No need for engine numbers just post a couple of photos of the engine and all will be revealed.

Come on Phil, now could be the time to post some definitive pics of the oil filter, dizzy , fittings and mounting brackets that define the different 1275s..

I'd like to see the differences ?

Pretty please...

This one shows the leak at the head.Very slight and seems to burn off so I don't think it is affecting the clutch

How about a picture of the complete engine, as seen when lifting the bonnet. Not easy to identify from those blurred shots, give us a sporting chance!! :D
