Morris fastback

Whilst doing a bit of googling earlier on today looking for a particular image, I came across a sketch drawing online of a proposed Morris fastback. This design was sketched up BMC engineers in Australia and released in about 1960. The design doesn't seem to have progressed beyond this sketch. What a wasted opportunity, I think the shape is fantastic and would have been another string to the Minor's bow. I'm conscious that designs can usually split opinion. What do others think of it?

It was conceived in the 60s, so drugs may have been involved !! :D

Looks like a Minor convertible fitted with an Ashley hard top.

Looks like it would have raised the top speed a little by being more aerodynamic!

Variety being the spice and so on, given infinite resources and a coachbuilder I'd definitely try it.

I'd have a try. Just a little bit more slope - think Sunbeam Rapier Coupé - and it would look better imho.

I can see that I am in a minority here!
The best thing I liked about my recently-departed Jowett Javelin was the shape, and I see similarities.

Back end has a slight resemblance to a Citroen DS. I like it

Looks like it ought to have a rear engine, just need a few slots in the boot lid to aid the air cooling :-?

One thing is clear: it does split opinion.

It reminds me of an old saab.
But its a "nearly not quite there design" to my eyes.

Agreed. The boot lid area is too angular. Minors should be rounded. Interesting idea, though.

Like the Austin. :tu1:
And I quite like the Minor concept too but then I understand that it is each to their own.
Triumph thought about a sloped (hatch) back Herald too but I believe in house rivalry (BMC) might have been partly behind that one never being more than a concept, albeit one that was built and survives.
Definitely a missed opportunity in my opinion.....

I wonder if it was the fact that the words 'Morris Minor' followed by 'Fast' made them pass on the idea....
