I Fried my Rev Counter !:(

A few days after fitting the power point (I don't think they call them ciggerette lighers any more), I turned on Hebe to a puff of smoke from the Rev Counter.
I ended up taking it off the coil and the mechanical imobiliser. I think Hebe's a bit pooched in the Rev Counter department.
Any ideas what caused it? my only thoughts are a power surge when I turned the ignition on, or perhaps a short behind the dash on the back of the rev counter ( I think there may be a short there)
The car started once I'd disconnected the rev counter but the yellow (at least it is on mine but it's probably originally red) wire from the Coil to the loom has become ever so slightly melted (which again indicates a high current going somewhere it shouldn't)
Luckily for me, everything still works, but I'll be looking to replace the loom asap...
Thoughts? comments?
