Rear brake shoe fault notification

Have recently attempted to change rear brake shoes on my ‘71 saloon.

I could not get enough adjustment on the new shoes.

After refitting several times and double checking I could still not get enough adjustment.

I finally put the old shoes back on and they adjusted fine.

Tried the new shoes one last time but same issue.

I then compared the old shoes to the new shoes and found that the new shoes were slightly smaller by a couple of mm thus reducing the overall diameter of the shoes when fitted and hence the issue with adjustment.

I called the supplier (ESM) this morning and they confirmed that they had identified an issue with a batch of shoes and would send me another set from a new batch. I have purchased many items from ESM and have found them to be an excellent supplier.

Just thought I’d share this info as I spent a while trying to work out what was wrong as you don’t expect the problem to be a new part.

I think that it's a good topic to make the alert - not everyone will read every post, and a "notification" might attract attention. It also speaks volumes for the integrity of ESM. There was another supplier (now not trading) whose standard response to a problem with a part was that they had not received any other complaints, and it must be your own problem. I can recall only one issue with a part from ESM, and that was replaced immediately without any question. That's the kind of service that we need.

Are you asking about owners getting it done, or actual companies that do it.... :-?

Yes, there's several around, this Austin 7 Specialist website lists a few re-lining companies:
https://oldcarservices.co.uk/brake-clutch-relining/
But you can expect to pay 4 or 5 times what a replacement set of shoes cost from a supplier like ESM.
Someone running a pre-war car doesn't have the spares support we have with Minors.
