Recently went sell the car but on the way the oil pressure was up and down and when I stopped the oil was pouring out ot the engine breather that just hangs out to the air.Tried more oil but it just pumped it out again.Getting the engine refurbished but just wondered if someone would know what may have happened thanks.

Possibly one or more piston rings broken or even one or more of the lands between the rings failed.

Removing the oil-filler cap (carefully), while the engine was running, might have given you some useful indication.

Assuming, here, it was oil blowing from the breather on the tappet cover?

You should have noticed if it has a hole in a piston, so PTH’s diagnosis is likely spot on.

Thank you both I can advise my chap of this but I guess he will soon notice if that is the case.I was thinking of sorting the clutch and timing chain at the same time.Is the oil seal on the rear of the engine easy enough to change.I guess I have one or qill we need to check with the engine out thanks.

There is no rear "seal" as such, it is an Archimedes screw or scroll that returns the oil to the sump. Given that you already appear to have excessive crankcase pressure, that will account for a leak at the rear. Without excessive pressure, the leak is normally caused by high mileage wear of crank and bearings. If you are thinking of one of the after-market conversion rubber lip seals, then search on here for views on that particular subject.
