Me gearbox has an issue that it jumps out of 4th but I have 5 gears so no problem.I have bought another Ford box but the delivery is apparently too long and needs some sort of work to make it fit the traveller.I know people do this but could I use parts from the original box to do this or would that be no use due to the gear jump.Dont know if that part would have to be part of the bits useed in the spline change.Basically could I use the old box to make the bought one work in its place or would it be better to referb the old box thanks

I’m not expert on this but if the car is not your daily driver I would have thought it was easier to have your existing gearbox refurbished. Then you know everything will fit without issues. Is it a Sierra gearbox?

More information is required regarding the original 5 speed box and the new Ford gearbox.
Not all Ford 5 speed gearboxes are the same.
If the gearboxes are the same, then there should be no problem in making one out of two.

Sounds like you have a v6 or diesel type 9 which have the longer input shaft, there are a wide range of ratios in the type 9, it's unlikely much will be interchangeable, I would think you will be better off getting your original re-built or getting another short shaft box.

Thanks yes I will most likely refurb the original which I guess is a ford 5 speed and give them the other for possible parts.

Other 5 speed gearboxes were fitted to the Minor.
Knowing what gearbox is already fitted would be a great help to whoever is going to overhaul the gearbox.
Your spare Ford gearbox might not even be relative to what you already have and therefore be of no use.

I think you should probably get under the car and have a look for any markings to help you identify exactly what kind of gearbox you have fitted.

If in any doubt as to the make and type of gearbox post a couple of photos on here and I am sure that it will be identified.
