Ford box, Ital engine - is this a Mog related question?

I'm trying to fit a type 9 box to an A+ engine, using the B'ham kit. Trouble is, the input shaft on the box seems to be too long to fit into the hole in the engine crank, bottoming out and leaving the bellhousing a good half inch clear of the engine. Any thoughts before I take a grinder to the input shaft

or start bodging spacers from the Ford bell housing?

I had exactly the same problem fitting a 1300 Ital engine to a standard 1098 box. I don't know what caused it but jiggling and twisting with help from another person did the trick in the end.

Cheers - but not this time, I think. Bit the bullet and shortened the input shaft, fitted it to engine and found that the splined portion of the shaft would've been inside the fly wheel if it had been fitted. Conclusion - it must be an 'N' type box, though I've never seen that cited as one of the differences - it does have 5th in the rear extension though. Oh well, we live and learn, we have no choice...

Sounda as if you have either a V6 or diesel type 9 ubit both of these have an extra 1" length on the input shaft. Check what the box is as the V6 unit will be okay as it has longer ratio's,but the diesel will not match your motor very well. Make sure you have radiused the cut end of the shaft.

Cheers for that Jonathon - but what about the splined bit of the shaft clashing with the flywheel? I can't see a way rouund that without engineering a recess into the output flange on the crank, or milling 1' of the splines down to round...

Bizzare this one!! cutting off the end of the shaft will only bring the spline closer to the clutch and flywheel as the box is allowed to move further in.
A spacer would cure the problem, but really this is very unusual for this modification. I would check the box again for its original application.

I'll try putting things together tomorrow, haven't tried it with the flywheel on yet. Perhaps my eyes are decieving me...

No dice -
The box only fits in as far as the start of the curve on the input shaft (red line). Can only assume that the length of the splined portion (A) is wrong... Anyone got a spare Type 9 (B variety, removable bellhousing) gearbox?

Still, gave me a chance to go to a new Scrappy, and hear the owner's errr... interesting Mog stories - he reckons that the Marina 1800 and Fiat 19" wheels are an easy fit, and very common - he and "loads" of his mates have done it...

Oooh Eck !!!
Andrew I have a few type 9's in at the moment, your most welcome to borrow one of them, or visit to try and sort this out.

Thanks for that, I will. Any of them for sale?

Andrew, the ones I have are second hand units,so I cannot confirm their quality. Your welcome to come and check them over

Kind of thought they'd be second hand! BTW, I've just written that cheque, at some point in the next fortnight I'll remember to post it... maybe

Should be with you on Wednesday.
LATER Back to studying the Haynes Book of Lies - from the photos in there, it doesn't look like their shaft has the widening just above the red line in my pic, V. Odd - wonder what it is I have got?

Here's a picture of my gearbox end, although it probably doesn't help:

It does - the shaft looks the same as the Haynes one! I'll do a pic of mine later (going for a haircut now...), but I think I'm giving up on that one and heading JLH wards

Smart wiring in the background, BTW.

The wiring in the black tube - or is that brakes? Anyway, quick pic here -

note 1) crude shortening of shaft and 2) very pronounced shoulder by the splines!

Ah, yes, both actually... two tubes, one wiring and one the feed from the remote brake cylinder reservoir.
Hmmm........ I don't know if it's my eyes, but it seems that you might have more splined section than me...
When I was lining things up for test, I took measurements with the bell-housing on the gearbox and then with the bell-housing on the engine to make sure that everything would line up OK.
Also, have you slotted the pivot for the thrust bearing to move on? and which type of thrust bearing are you using? carbon or roller type?

I think it's the splined bit that's wrong too. Yup, the pivot is slotted, and I've gone for the roller bearing/hydraulic clutch, easier than faffing with mechanical I hope.

Ooooooooooooh! Where did you get the roller bearing from??
If we meet up at the national, I'll let you hear mine squeal it's head off!
