HIF 38 carb overflowing

I have a leak from my HIF38 carb. It came to light when I was fitting new LED bulbs to the car, and I turned the ignition on to check the indicator bulbs and brake bulbs (for no longer than 1 minute periods, but over the course of the bulb fitting and checking, the ignition was turned on a number of times) and this is when I discovered fuel pouring out from the carb overflow pipe.
After I had mopped up the puddle of fuel, I decided to start the car to see if the carb would continue to leak fuel - but no further leaks were observed.
Was the fuel leak an indication that there is an issue with the carb (float? dirt?) or could this just be the too much time with the ignition on and the fuel pump overfilling the carb (in which case, why didn't the float cut off the supply?) .
In previous years when I have had the ignition switch on for fitting items to the car (eg electric fan) I have never noticed the carb leaking fuel.
I'm a pretty much 'hands on' type when looking after my car, but I've never touched the carb before. Any top tips to fixing this issue/servicing an HIF38? Any suggestions welcomed!
Many thanks.
