'57 Traveller front wheel grease caps

I'm trying to remove the front wheel grease caps to check/refill grease.

How do I get the caps off?

I don't see a way to pry them off, and I can't turn them with channel locks. Neither side will budge.

A small charge of dynamite?

Thanks.

There should be a little groove in the side of the grease cap which allows you to prise it off with a suitable screwdriver. It will be easier if you have removed the wheel first.....

I do not know about the groove but there is a raised ridge around the side of the cap which fits against the hub. You should be able to get the flat blade of the screwdriver between the raised ridge and the hub. As above - easier if the wheel is removed as it allows the screw blade to sit at a better contact angle to the raised ridge.
Whilst it is acceptable to place a small amount of grease in the cap having an excess of grease can lead to hub seal failure and the displacement of the hub cap due to expansion of the grease.

Yes, you are correct, Phil. I didn't explain properly but what I really meant was that the ridge on the cap and the edge of the hub create between them a kind of groove that allows leverage to the cap with a screwdriver.

Grip gently with a pair of plumbers adjustable pliers and give it a wiggle.

Thanks gentlemen. I did try gripping with adjustable pliers/channel locks; no luck. I'll see if I can find a lip on the cap to use for prising; now I see the advantage of removing the wheel.

Thanks.

I have had success using a wide wood chisel.Place it under the ridge ,tap lightly with a small hammer all round the edge.
