New Drums

Post by NETTIE »

I stripped the rear brakes today no real shocks osr was over adjusted nsr under adjusted but the drums have seen better days well one off them looks like someone has replaced just one many moons ago the other has a few deep rail tracks the cylinders don't look very old and everything seems to be working but in the big picture i going to be using the car regularly so do it once do it right.
Your advice please I'm going to fit new shoes drums and adjusters Is there a better make or quality to be had mintex shoes are supposed to be good ect and are the esm drums ok i think there pattern though
Any advice welcomed

The rear drums are 7”, you should have a choice of UK made drums or cheaper pattern ones at ESM. You’ll get Mintex shoes and pattern ones there too.

The cam snail adjusters very rarely wear and so will probably not need replacing. If your cylinders are working fine I’d leave them alone as you say.

Personal preference re: UK made/Mintex versus pattern of course, but I’m generally of the view “if you buy cheap, you buy twice.” If you can afford the better quality parts my opinion is go for them.

Finally, beware old brake shoes. They may contain asbestos.
A bad day with my Volksie still beats a good day at work!
