Sorry for what is a novice question.
is there a difference between n/s brake cylinders and o/s brake cylinders?

Yes, there is. Both Nearside are the same and both offside are the same but each side has different castings.
The original Lockheed cylinders used to be marked R (for right) and L (for left). Not sure that they still are though.
