Swapping remote control shafts

The gear change on my 1275 midget gearbox is very sloppy with the gear lever having a lot of play, although it selects gears with no problem. I am hoping this is just wear in the connections on the shaft at each end. I have a 1098 remote control and the shaft feels tight and I wanted to swap them over but am not sure how to get the shaft out. There are 'welch plugs' at each end of the housing and I wondered if they tap out and if so, from which direction?
