Can someone please tell me the correct size socket for the steering wheel lock nut? I wonder if a metric size is close enough as that would probably be easier to obtain?

The size of the steering wheel nut is 3/4" BSW 7/8" BSF.
The majority of nut and thread sizes can be found at the top of the technical/mechanical section.

Here is a suitable socket:-

As the steering wheel nut is quite thin I personally would remove the concave from the socket by grinding or machining it away.
When pulling off the steering wheel - leave the nut in place by a couple of threads otherwise the steering wheel could fly off and give you a nasty whack.

…and remember to disconnect the battery before putting the socket on, otherwise the socket will complete the circuit and the horn sounds! You only make that mistake once!
